The girls varsity tennis team took on Olathe East Sept. 7 and lost overall 10–2 in their matches.
Senior Mary Slattery played a hard-fought, 6–8 loss in her singles match that took almost an hour and a half. The match had 29 deuces.
“About halfway through , I was exhausted. I was focusing poorly and I was focusing more on not getting sick than playing; was running down the ball well and I wasn’t getting there. It was just a hard match to play,” Slattery said.
Slattery and her partner, junior Claire Gordon, won their match at number one doubles in a tie breaker. The game ended in a 7–7 tie, and Slattery and Gordon won the tie breaker 7–5.
“We needed to focus more in the doubles match. It’s hard playing with Claire because we are good friends, and we tend to joke around, and we just have to stop and remind ourselves what we are there to do,” Slattery said.
The team will continue their season against Blue Valley Northwest 3:15 p.m. Sept. 8 at home.
