Former president Donald Trump was the subject of another assassination attempt on Sept. 15.
Secret Service agents spotted a rifle barrel pointed at Trump Sunday afternoon at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.
The incident, now being labeled by the FBI as an assassination attempt, was quickly controlled by law enforcement. The Secret Service shot at the suspect, who dropped his weapon and fled in a black Nissan, while local police sealed off the area.
The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh by The Associated Press, was apprehended by law enforcement. According to the online North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, records say that Routh was previously convicted in 2002 for possessing a “weapon of mass destruction.” Eyewitnesses helped identify the suspect’s license plate, which police tracked.
The suspect left behind an AK-47-style rifle, two backpacks and a GoPro camera at the golf course.
“In the bushes, where this guy was, is an AK-47 style rifle with a scope; two backpacks, which were hung on the fence and had ceramic tile in them; and a GoPro,” Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said, according to CNN.
The motive for the assassination attempt is still being investigated.
The former president, unharmed, left the golf course in a motorcade and is currently at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
“My resolve is only stronger after another attempt on my life,” Trump, the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, said in a campaign fundraising email, according to the New York Times. The previous assassination attempt had been made a little more than two months earlier on July 13 at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.
JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, posted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had spoken with Trump before the assassination attempt was made public. Vance said Trump was “amazingly, in good spirits.”
Politicians from all parties have voiced their relief that Trump was unharmed by the attempt.
“I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe,” Vice President Kamala Harris, Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election, said on X. “Violence has no place in America.”
The FBI is now leading the investigation of the assassination attempt.
