Uncut Gems Review
2.5/5
January 27, 2020
“Uncut Gems” is a 2019 Mystery/Crime film about a jeweler who gambles money that he has borrowed from dangerous people. He gets in trouble and ends up having to engage in high stake bets to try and get his money back. Even with this interesting story idea, this movie is just boring. Although its leading actor gives an incredible performance with a well fleshed out story, it is just awful to sit through. Two hours and 15 minutes have never felt so long.
This movie stars Adam Sandler is a dramatic role in which he thrives. He gives an award-worthy performance and is one of the only redeeming qualities of this movie. The entire cast gives amazing performances, with Sandler excelling in his role.
The other redeeming quality is the plot itself. It is a very original idea and storyline and if it was executed better, would be really enjoyable to watch. It’s different, I’ll say that.
This movie has terrible pacing, which ruins the whole movie. It feels unbearably long and is almost impossible to sit through. Not to mention the fact that it’s very confusing since there seems to be no rhyme or reason to anything that is happening on the screen. The movie will just display random pictures and visuals without any reason behind it. It feels fake and doesn’t leave an enjoyable viewing experience. The cinematography is shakey, the editing is weird and it is just completely frantic and too confusing to enjoy.
This movie is marketed as a crime/mystery, but it isn’t. It’s just a drama that follows a weird guy who sells precious gems. While crime is involved in the plot, it wouldn’t be defined as a mystery or crime centered film. Overall the movie is just slow and confusing, with its only redeeming qualities being the cast and the basic plot.
