Senior Demarcus Houston died from injuries sustained in shooting

Senior Demarcus Houston has passed away after being shot on Thursday night.

According to KCTV5, police are continuing to identify the sequence of events leading up to this incident. Houston and two others were shot in Kansas City, MO, two miles from the Kauffman Stadium. One is expected to survive, according to officials.

In an email sent to parents on Saturday afternoon, principal Dr. Lisa Gruman expressed her condolences to the family and concern for members of the Northwest community.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Demarcus,” Gruman said. “We remember the kindness he shared throughout our community. Death is always difficult to handle, especially the loss of someone so young. Our senior class and community experienced another loss this summer, and this tragedy may prompt a wide array of emotions.”

This is the second Northwest student to pass away in the last six months.

School social workers are available by appointment at Northwest on Nov. 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. Here are sources provided to students, parents, and faculty to contact a counselor to seek counseling and a guide for parents when talking to their children about death.

    About the Contributor
    Sofia Ball, Writer
Hi! My name is Sofia Ball and I am a writer for the Northwest Passage. Writing started out as a hobby for me. Something I never imagined I would be good at until about 7th grade after taking a creative writing class with Dr. Van Zant. I just started out as a freshman, and already, I've come to know and love many of the classes, teachers and students here at Northwest. I’d like to think of myself as an extrovert, but most of my freetime is spent either reading, writing or watching Netflix in my bedroom. I used to watch The Office all the time before it got removed. The only time you'll ever see me out and about is probably at Cross Country or Track practice. You may even see me handing out our latest newspaper issues around the school.
