Q&A with the 2020 Prom court candidates

This year took an unexpected turn when the rest of the school year was canceled – including Prom. The 22 nominated seniors did not get a chance to attend their last dance or be announced at the Prom assembly, so we instead asked them questions about themselves to be showcased online.

  • Sara Tamayo Q: Who were you nominated by? A: Spirit club Q: Best song of all time? A: “Knee Deep” by Zac Brown Band. Q: Biggest fear? A: Anything involving a snake is a no-go for me. Q: Favorite type of food? A: Chick-fil-A. Sent straight down from heaven. Q: How do you feel about Prom being canceled? A: Prom being canceled was very upsetting because it was one of the last times the senior class would all be together to share one last memory. It was something we had looked forward to since freshman year. Q: What are your plans for college? A: Next year I will be attending The University of Kansas to study behavioral neuroscience on the pre-med track.

A: I plan on going to Pittsburg State and I’m planning on majoring in technology and minoring in business

  • Nura Ghasempour Q: Who were you nominated by? A: Girls’ soccer Q: Biggest pet peeve? A: When people view my story but don’t snap me back. Q: How do you feel about Prom being canceled? A: I’m a little bummed it’s canceled because I was really looking forward to being on court and being able to share this moment with some of my classmates. Q: What will you miss most about Northwest? A: Mr. Wolfe. Q: What is your favorite thing to do during quarantine? A: Watching as much TV as I can. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I plan on going to a four-year university to study developmental psychology.

  • Emma Gude Q: Who were you nominated by? A: Softball and baseball Q: Biggest pet peeve? A: Slow drivers. Q: What is your special talent? A: I’m really knowledgeable about zodiac signs. I’m a libra. Q: What will you miss most about Northwest? A: The softball program. That’s where I found my closest Cougar family, and a lot of my fun memories are with the softball team. Q: What is your favorite thing to do during quarantine? A: I’ve been baking a lot, and making a lot of dessert things that I’ve seen on TikTok or Pinterest. I’ve also been trying to get into running, so I’ve been running every day. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I’m not 100% sure where I’m going yet, but I want to major in something business-related – either international business or management, depending on the school. Then I want to go into law school. I’m looking at St. Louis University, the University of Iowa, and K-State.

A: When people say “I’m doing good,” versus “I’m doing well.” Q: Favorite movie/TV show? A: “Spongebob Squarepants” Q: What will you miss most about Northwest? A: The opportunity I was given to grow in my abilities and the time it gave me to figure myself out. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I plan on going to JCCC for music production to further my career as an artist.

A: “Clueless” Q: How do you feel about Prom being canceled? A: I honestly cry about it because I was so excited for my experience on court, my last cheer performance at the assembly, and my last school dance. Q: What is your favorite thing to do during quarantine? A: Work out, because it makes me feel productive and I know I won’t regret it later on. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I’m going to KU for college and I plan on studying nutrition.

A: Knitting Q: What’s your best advice for future students? A: If you are in the student section, be loud. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I am going to the University of Central Florida to study engineering.

  • Payton Smith Q: Who were you nominated by? A: Varsity cheer Q: Biggest fear? A: Heights. Q: Favorite type of food? A: Plain pasta. Q: What is your special talent? A: Being able to sleep for more than 12 hours a day. Q: What will you miss most about Northwest? A: The vibe and all the people. Q: What are your plans for college? A: My future plans are to attend Ottawa University to study sports medicine, and I’ll be cheering there also.

A: “Pineapple Express” Q: What is your special talent? A: I’d say being a master at pong play. Q: What’s your best advice for future students? A: Have fun, don’t be afraid to meet new people and go to as many school events as you can. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I will attend JCCC and participate in their electrical technology program.

A: I get along well with people I don’t like. Q: What’s your best advice for future students? A: Always give someone your full attention. You never know when it will be your last time seeing someone. Q: What is your favorite thing to do during quarantine? A: I really love hiking. Taking secret trails at Shawnee Mission Park to avoid people is the best. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I’m going to the University of Lincoln-Nebraska to study political science.

  • Zak Gorsuch Q: Who were you nominated by? A: KUGR and Art National Honor Society Q: Biggest fear? A: Probably Zach Dulny. Q: What is your special talent? A: I can recite the entire plot from the 1997 video game of Final Fantasy Seven from memory. Q: What’s your best advice for future students? A: Skate or die. Q: What will you miss most about Northwest? A: It will be hard to live in a world where I don’t get an hour each day to talk with Pabst about intermediary storytelling. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I’m planning on attending the Kansas City Art Institute to study filmmaking and illustration.

  • Payton Rowland Q: Who were you nominated by? A: National Honor Society and Young Republicans Club Q: Favorite type of food? A: Sushi/sashimi. Q: What is your special talent? A: Drinking straight apple cider vinegar or lemon juice concentrate. Q: What’s your best advice for future students? A: Don’t let the unknowns of the furture consume your mind. Appreciate the present for what it is. Q: How do you feel about Prom being canceled? A: Although I’m going to miss the experience with so many people I love, there are more important things in life. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I’m not 100% sure where I’ll be attending, but I plan to study behavioral psychology and forensic science on a premedical track.

A: Don’t let your peers affect who you are. Q: How do you feel about Prom being canceled? A: It was the only dance I would’ve gone to so I was kinda sad. Q: What are your plans for college? A: Somewhere for baseball and I’ll probably study sports administration.

  • Greta Bellu (exchange student from Italy) Q: Who were you nominated by? A: Yearbook Q: Best song of all time? A: “1950” by King Princess and “Tonic Water” by Moglii ft. NOVAA. Q: Biggest fear? A: The regret of not working hard enough to achieve my goals. Q: Favorite type of food? A: Of course, Italian food. Especially pizza. Q: How do you feel about Prom being canceled? A: Prom was a dream because I just saw it through movies and now that it was so close this happens. It’s definitely not the worst consequence of this virus and I accepted it. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I haven’t fully decided. I still have a 5th year of highschool in Italy, but I’d like to attend the University of Language and Communication in Milan.

A: I’ve always wanted to go to Italy and see the Colosseum in Rome. I really want to travel the world when I’m older. Q: Biggest pet peeve? A: I hate when people bump into me and don’t say sorry or excuse me. Q: Favorite movie/TV show? A: My favorite movie is “Logan.” It’s the one with Wolverine when he’s older. Q: What is your special talent? A: I’m really good at talking to different types of people like adults or kids.

  • Katey Yenger Q: Who were you nominated by? A: Teacher Education/Educators Rising Q: Best song of all time? A: “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. It holds a lot of different memories all in just one song. Q: Biggest fear? A: Cicadas. Q: Favorite type of food? A: Anything with pesto. It’s a bad addiction. Q: What’s your best advice for future students? A: It’s not as bad as it seems. Find a club, a person, anything that can help you find a sense of belonging. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I’m planning on going to JCCC for two years to get my associate degree in early child education. Then I plan on finishing the last two years and get my bachelor degree in elementary education.

A: I will be attending Saint Louis University next year to study biochemistry.
