Boys’ swim and dive qualified for state in multiple events and ended the season with an 11th-place finish under the direction of new coach Matt Wolfe, the team’s third coach in five years. Wolfe previously had coached the West girls’ swim and dive team.
“The transition was about as smooth as it could be,” Wolfe said. “The boys did a nice job adjusting to the huge change. It’s always difficult to replace a well-liked coach , but I think we did fine.”
The boys only lost one dual meet, against East, in the regular season. The team placed fifth in the Sunflower League meet and 11th at State, which was the same place they secured last year.
“Our team did awesome at state; we really finished strong,” Wolfe said. “The swimmers saved their best performances for the end of the season.”
One diver, junior Connor Stephens, and seven swimmers qualified for state, including sophomores Benjamin Koeller and Max Oberbroeckling, juniors Jonathan Plagge and Jonathan Volker, and seniors Zack Congrove, Jens Thomsen and Lars Winkelmolen. Wolfe is looking forward to next year, when he hopes the team will perform even better.
“The swimmers coming back next year are setting the stage for the swim season to come,” Wolfe said. “We’re also hoping new swimmers join the team. Next year will be interesting.”
