Charli Meets the Moment

Charli XCX’s new mockumentary perfectly ends “BRAT summer”

“The Moment” is exactly what the title says it is, THE moment.

The film is a mockumentary about Charli XCX (playing herself), coming off the huge success of her 2024 album “BRAT.” The mockumentary follows Charli as she tries to put together a tour for her album, while working with director Johannes (played by Alexander Skarsgard) to create a concert film for Prime Video. The film attempts to make fun of the big, “at the top” stereotype of a pop star doing anything to stay relevant.

This is the debut film of photographer-turned-director Aidan Zamiri. The film premiered at Sundance, produced by A24 and released on January 30 in theaters.

“The Moment” shows Charli at her most vulnerable; at the top of the industry while having a million things to deal with: her tour, her management, and trying to keep BRAT alive.

The film analyzises what it’s like to be at the top, dealing with the success while everyone is trying to keep the success going. Charli tries to balance others’ decisions while still trying to get what she wants. This causes Charli to struggle between listening to others and fighting for herself.

The film has very dry humor, with times where it’s hard to tell whether to laugh or take it seriously, but there are still many funny moments throughout.

Charli plays herself while Alexander Skarsgard plays Johannes, the pretentious movie director, so well to the point where I wanted him out of the film because he was making me so mad. There are also great guest appearances from Rachel Sennott and Kylie Jenner, bringing more humor into serious moments and perfectly fitting the vibes of the movie.

The film is a mix of fun, comedy, while also being serious at the same time during moments such as when Charli goes on vacation to get away from the tour, giving us an inside look at her feelings.

The soundtrack is also stellar, with an A.G. Cook techno soundtrack while also having features of Charli XCX tracks and “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve.

Even though it breaks form by being a satire in a satire, it manages to pull it off so well.

Charli manages to break away from the stereotypes by making fun of the stereotypes in this film. She makes fun of doing anything to stay relevant while releasing the film making her stay relevant, and at the same time as this film’s release, releasing her soundtrack for “Wuthering Heights.”The irony makes the point of the film work so well.

The film shows more of artists in the industry fighting and getting what they want, compared to what their managers and labels want.

Overall, this is a new step forward for Charli, fully ending “BRAT summer” through this film and moving on to new things. Hopefully, those new things are a new album other than a soundtrack.

“The Moment” perfectly encapsulates the chaotic yet fun moment of “BRAT,” while giving an inside look into being at the top and being the perfect metaphor for the music industry. This is a must see. I give it a rating of 5/5.
