Northwest student drowns in a Shawnee lake

Updated Story:

The teenage boy found dead has been confirmed as SM Northwest senior Treyvon Mays.

Updated Story:

Around 10 p.m. Tuesday evening, the body of a teenage boy was found in Lakeview Estates Lake in Shawnee, Kan.
Jerad Habben, a witness at the scene, has confirmed that the boy was Treyvon Mays, a senior at SM Northwest High School.

Habben and his younger brother had paddle boarded into the middle of the lake around 8 p.m. Mays and two others who were at the lake decided to swim out to the paddle boarders. As they made their way further from shore, Mays began to lag behind.

Jared Habben did not see Mays go under, and says that, “all the sudden, he was gone.”

Authorities searched the lake for nearly an hour and half.

A dive team from the Overland Park Police Department recovered Mays’ body.

Jackson Brogan, a neighbor who had rushed to see what was going on recalls hearing shouts of “He’s got a pulse,” as Mays was brought onto dry land.

CPR was performed, but attempts at resuscitation failed.

Authorities are in contact with Mays’ mother, and an autopsy is scheduled for Aug. 17.

This story will be updated as details become available.
