The chants of hip hip hooray rang loud outside the Cougar’s locker room as they handled SMN 44-29 for Coach Black’s first win as SMNW’s head coach.
“Wins are always good no doubt about that,” Head coach Bo Black said. “You take them how you get them. This one wasn’t real pretty but we are excited about the victory for sure.”
The Cougar offense clicked in a balanced offensive attack. The offensive line made room for Xavier Perry to get into space and then he bulldozed any defenders in his way.
“The biggest reason was because of my line,” running back Xavier Perry said. “I couldn’t do anything without my line. They are just the biggest help out there.”
The other side of the offensive attack was quarterback Ron Kopp, who was zipping the ball around the field. Kopp was able to hit his targets for large gains and touchdowns while picking apart the SMN defense.
“We had a good gameplan and we knew what North was going to throw at us,” Kopp said. “We ran the right routes. We did our thing and ran them full speed. Hit my guys and had a good night.”
The team was motivated after getting blown out last week to Blue Valley and they came back with avengence.
“We had a really good week of practice,” Kopp said. “We were really in focus, really doing our thing this week. We showed it on the field today. I am proud of every single one of them.”
While they team was able to get the win, Coach Black sees some areas they need to improve in order to beat the number one ranked SME Lancers next Friday night.
“We have a long way to go,” Black said. “ We made a ton of mistakes. Offensively we are very good. Defensively we are not very good yet. We have to make some adjustments. But we made progress from last week and that’s what it is about.”
