Dear Shawnee Mission School District Students, Parents, and Staff Members,
Enterovirus D68, a severe respiratory illness, has received recent media attention for its presence in the Kansas City Metro area.
Although we have not seen large numbers of Enterovirus D68 in the Shawnee Mission School District, we are taking precautions to control the spread of the virus. These are the same practices we have in place for cold/flu season:
* Wash hands frequently
* Cover coughs and sneezes
* Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth throughout the day
* Avoid those who are sick
* Stay home if you are ill
The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment recommends following the same cleaning and disinfecting practices that are encouraged during flu season.
Enterovirus D68 may present as a common cold but typically progresses to a fever, severe cough, difficulty breathing, and/or wheezing. Please seek medical attention for all severe respiratory symptoms. Children who are ill should remain home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the aid of medication. For more information please visit www.cdc.gov<http://www.cdc.gov>. If you have additional questions, please contact the nurse at your child’s school.
