Shawnee Mission schools spend Monday in lockdown

All of the Shawnee Mission schools were in lockdown through Sept. 9. The Overland Park Police Department received a vague threat by email between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. this morning.

“A person got in a fight with some people in Olathe and was upset about the result of the fight,” Overland Park police officer Michelle Koos said. “ was going to come back to a school, no specific school and was going to settle the score.”

As a precaution, gym classes were held indoors and sports practices were inside the building. During the day the school locked the doors and posted teachers at each main exit.

“I think we are pretty safe,” sophomore Jake Nobrega said. “ locked all the doors as soon as everyone entered the school, and we had staff members at all the doors, so I feel pretty safe here.”

Schools will not be in lockdown tomorrow, according to Overland Park Police Department dispatcher Matt Schmidt.
