24 poets from across the district will gather to Horizon’s High School to compete in the Shawnee Mission District Poetry Slam. This year Teddy Trice, Isabel Zacharias, Alex Franklin, and Alex Geis were chosen to perform for Northwest. These poets had the highest scores out of an outstanding 80 contestants to begin with in the Poetry Slam.
“I thought that this year’s poetry slam went fantastic,” Lindsay Kincaid said. “The quality of poems gets better every year.”
In the first ever District Poetry Slam each school will send four poets who choose whether to perform as teams or individuals. Every poet will perform at least once and must perform for no more than three minutes. They are able to perform any poem they have written in their entire lives.
At the end of the preliminary round the four scores of each school will be added together for a total score out of 160 points. Then the top six poets will compete in the finals to become the Shawnee Mission District “SLAMpion”.
“I have no idea what to expect,” Kincaid said. “I want this to be a success and be fun.” This event will be held at 6:00 on Sunday May 2 and is free of cost.
