Girl Bosses
Recognizing Northwest female leadership
August 9, 2021
Continuation of this year’s Freshman Magazine
Meg Qualls – KUGR Producer, Young Democrats President and Spirit Club co-Vice President
How does it feel to be a female leader in your clubs?
I feel like the female aspect gets eliminated a little bit, because there’s so much female leadership representation at Northwest.
What advice would you give to people striving for leadership positions?
Give 110 percent effort into what you do, and it’ll make a huge difference. Be yourself when applying and interviewing. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get the position. Rejection is a part of life and a sign there are better things out there for you.
Tori Neighbour – National Honors Society (NHS) Vice President
How does it feel to be a female leader in your club?
As a female leader in NHS, I hope and believe I am able to get the same experience as anyone else. We have all worked hard to be here and bring a variety of amazing things to Northwest.
What advice would you give to other people striving for leadership positions?
I think anyone can be a leader for something that they are passionate about. An important part in being a leader is to trust others and ask for help. Being a leader doesn’t mean you have to do everything by yourself.
Anne Borberg – Spirit Club co-Vice President and NHS Publicist
What made you decide to apply for a leadership role?
I have always been a leader. Whether I’ve been given a leadership position, or just being the loudest and most confident person I can be in whatever I’m doing. I think applying for my Spirit Club position was more (about) what I was leading.
Do you think female leadership is becoming more dominant at Northwest?
I don’t think it was ever gone. I believe Northwest gives everyone such an amazing opportunity to be the leader they want to be in anything they want to do. It’s awesome that we have such an awesome grade level (with) so many female leaders.
Natalie Peterson – 2022 Class Vice President and Spirit Club President
What made you decide to apply for a leadership role?
I have been passionate about getting involved in Northwest since freshman year. Throughout my time involved in Spirit Club and StuCo, I felt that I had learned enough from upperclassmen that I would be qualified to take over the positions they held so well. I love Northwest, and have so much fun planning and running these events, that I wanted to take that commitment a step further by being able to help others get involved as well.
Do you think female leadership is becoming more dominant at Northwest?
I absolutely think female leadership is becoming more dominant at Northwest. With a female student body president coming into office and more female leadership in Spirit Club and other Northwest organizations, I think it helps inspire other Northwest women to get involved and know that they are just as capable of having everything they want as any guy is.
Alyssa Cunningham – CCC Vice President
What advice would you give to other people striving for leadership positions?
People who are thinking about leadership goals should literally just do it. Take that leap and go for it, you will not regret it, I promise. The feeling you get from being this involved is unreal, it is truly the best high school experience. Many people that have graduated from high school have told me they wish they would’ve been more involved, so don’t make that mistake.
Do you think female leadership is becoming more dominant at Northwest?
Looking at all the executive boards, I see so many females taking the roles of President and Vice President, and I am so proud to be a part of that. I seriously cannot think of one major executive board (this year) that doesn’t have a female as a leader, it makes me very happy to see that.
