Kevin Murphy

NW new staff full interview with Kevin Murphy, a NW social studies teacher

What does your position entail?

I am teaching US History and World Regional Studies, so juniors and freshmen.

What does a day in your life look like?

Being a coach, it depends whether I’m in season or out of season. Right now, it consists most of the time getting to school sometime between 6:30 and 7 a.m., I’ll teach all day, go to practice, if it’s a shorter practice I’ll lift afterwards, go home, eat, sleep and do it again.

What inspired you to go into this field?

My aunt, she passed away when I was younger. She was a counselor at an inner city school district in Chicago and the impact that she had on students. She passed away during football season. The students came , and she had multiple football players miss their game to come and sing at her funeral and just be there. So seeing the impact that she had on students definitely pushed me to get started.

What makes Northwest stand out from other schools?

I had the benefit of being at Trailridge for the past three years and with that, I already had an idea of what the culture was like over here. In all honesty the culture is something that was a game changer overall that I knew I wanted to be a part of.

Highlight of the year so far?

Being back in school to start off with.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Being able to have more in depth conversations with more mature students at the high school level, as opposed to having those at the middle school level.

What are your goals for the year?

Hopefully, to have a positive impact on somebody this year.

How can students contact you?

They can email me through school email.

What is one thing you would say to the NW student body?

Times are weird, but keep pushing through. It’s getting better and better and hopefully by the end of the year, are gone.

Where have you worked before?

First three years I was at Trailridge, and prior to that I coached collegiate football. I started at Bethany College, my alma mater, went to a school in Montana, Montana State Northern and then coached at Missouri Valley College for a year.
