Statewide School Closure

Less than 24 hours after Shawnee Mission School District decided to close their doors until April 3 as part of an attempt slow the spread of COVID-19, Governor Laura Kelly, following the lead of many other states, ordered all public schools in Kansas to suspend on-site instruction for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

This closure extends to SMSD, meaning that the district will be closing all schools for the rest of the year. As a result of all district facilities closing, the district will be cancelling all activities, athletics and extra-curricular activities for the remainder of the school year.

“This edict includes all rentals that use the facilities of SMSD,” Athletics and Student Activities Director Richard Kramer wrote. “At this point in time no one is to be on school grounds for any reasons. The district will continue to inform us concerning the operations of our school district More to come as information becomes available.”

More to come as decisions are made and information becomes available.
