Cross country starts season strong

On Monday, Sept. 3 the boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Greg Wilson Classic at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School. Boys ran a 5K and and girls ran a 4K.

Junior Nate Sterns won first place for the boys JV with the time 18:09.3.

“Greg Wilson is my favorite meet because it is the first-kicks of the season. I was trying to help my team win and I achieved more than I thought I would,” Sterns said.

Freshman Chandler Bado came in with a time of 18:47.7 and placed fourth overall, and senior Lucas Verschelden finished in ninth with a time of 19:05.2.

For the girls JV team, junior Hayley Nugent came in first for her team with a time of 17:09.0 and placed third overall. Sophomore Carson Wapp came in with a time of 17:37.5 and placed seventh overall. Senior Shelby Dominguez placed ninth overall with a time of 17:40.8.

For the girls Varsity team, senior McKenzie Iverson came in first at a time of 15:46.6 and placed second overall in the race, and senior Katie Nelson came in with a time of 16:39.9 and placed twelfth overall.

For the boys Varsity team, senior Clayton Henderson finished first out of the NW team, fourth overall, with a time of 16:46.6 and Junior Connor McDonald came in with the time of 16:51.4 and placed fifth overall. Senior Kirk Bado came in with 16:54.9 and placed sixth overall.

“The main obstacle was just overcoming the heat,” sophomore Carson Wapp said. “We had to push ourselves really hard, and together we finished strong as a team. Our JV/C team finished in second place to St. Thomas Aquinas. We were kind of disappointed, but we’re all still really proud that we completed our first race.”

The Cross Country team’s next track meet, which will include the Girls 4K and Boys 5K, will be at Emporia State on Sept 8.
