Leavenworth to leave Sunflower League

Matthew Owens, Sports Editor

The Sunflower League is about to look a little different in the 2018-2019 academic year as Leavenworth has decided to leave in favor of a new 5A league. The Leavenworth Unified School District 453 Board of Education unanimously voted 7-0 to leave the Sunflower League at the May 17th board meeting. This new 5A league would include schools such as Leavenworth, Desoto, Shawnee Heights, Lansing, Basehor and Turner and would be created in the 2018-2019 academic year.
There has been no talk on whether the Sunflower League would add another school or continue with 11. If a school is likely to be a target for the new addition to the league it would be the new Olathe school, Olathe West. However Olathe West will most likely not be a 6A school for some time based on current enrollment trends.
