More than 600 students turn out for 5 a.m. assembly [Updated]

More than 600 students turn out for 5 a.m. assembly [Updated]

Nominated a “KCTV5 Cool School,” Northwest hosted a special Pep Assembly this morning. More than 600 students were in the stands of the new auxiliary gym by 5 a.m. to participate in the rally.

Not only was Northwest the first school to receive the award, but the event was the first to be held in the newly completed auxiliary gym. As part of its “Cool School” coverage, KCTV5 will broadcast live from one high school every Friday morning throughout the 2009-2010 school year.

According to its site, the program features “high schools that have a number of different ‘cool’ non-athletic achievements. It’s not just one thing that makes a school ‘cool,’ it’s many.” As a result, KCTV5 reporter Greg Adaline interviewed the students from those recognized clubs: marching band, Cougar Community Commitment, the robotics club and journalism.

The spirit rally was sponsored by Spirit Club and led by Spirit Club sponsors Drew Magwire and Katie Melcher, keeping the crowd of nearly 800 awake and responsive as they led them through the Cougar Coaster and other cheers and games during the 2.5 hour event.

They also presented the school’s new motto.

“We’re going to say three words, people. I’m going to say the first two and you’re going to say the last,” Melcher said.

“We are…”

“NORTHWEST,” the crowd shouted.

“We are…”

“NORTHWEST!”

Krispy Kreme provided several dozen fresh donuts as door prizes for attendees and Wendy’s, one sponsor of KCTV5’s Cool School program, will give free Frosties to all NW students who present their student identification cards.
