50 Shades of Black

50+Shades+of+Black

Rating: 1 out of 5Strikingly funny, yet dumbfounding throughout, the parody of Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades of Black is not something I recommend seeing. In my opinion, no “spoof-movie” has ever succeeded in the box office, and this one is no different from the rest.

This R-rated parody follows the Fifty Shades of Grey storyline fairly well, excluding the stripper roommate and hobo brother. Kali Hawk, who has appeared in Tyler Perry’s Peeples and Couples Retreat, plays the main character, Hannah Steele.

Christian Black, played by Marlon Wayans, interviews Hannah at his fancy office. This is where the jokes start rolling in. The receptionist asks for Hannah’s coat, only to drop it on the ground, then she proceeds to bully Hannah the whole way to Christian’s office.

I knew the kind of jokes I was signing up for with this movie, but I was still uncomfortable during the more explicit scenes. Cheap shock seemed to be the goal, rather than anything resembling clever. Piercing Hannah’s inch-long belly button with a butterfly ring was the icing on the obnoxious cake.

Hawk and Wayans played their parts well, but not together. I felt the couple was uncomfortable during the majority of their scenes, as if the actors did not want to be there. This may have intensified the parody for some, but I wanted to see at least some chemistry. Many details were too exaggerated, the main plot is what should have been twisted.

The original movie was mentioned throughout in small stabs by Christian. In one scene he even read from the book itself, criticizing the author for being “boring”. Seeing Fifty Shades of Grey beforehand might have been useful since I only knew the main premise of the original. This movie was 50 shades of disgusting.
